How To Plan Your Engagement Session

Planning your engagement session is an incredibly exciting part of the wedding process. It’s your chance to capture beautiful and meaningful moments with your partner before the big day, learn to become comfortable around the camera, as well as getting to meet your photographer in person before your wedding day. Planning your engagement session can feel overwhelming, but I promise it will be the most beautiful stepping stone moving into your wedding day. So in this blog post, I’ll outline some tips on planning your session and how to make the most of your day!

Choose the Right Location

Choosing the right location for your engagement session may seem daunting, especially if there are so many locations to choose from in your area. A perfect location for the two of you as a couple could very well be right in front of your eyes; select a location that is meaningful to the two of you. Is there a location near you where you had your first date? Potentially your favorite park, where you got engaged, or simply a place that you both like to spend time together at.

By choosing a location that is meaningful, it adds an extra layer of significance to your images. When there is a story behind the photos that you get back, it will be so much more fun to tell those stories to family members for years to come.

If you do not have a location that holds meaning however, you can always stick to picking a location that simply looks and feels like the two of you as a couple. If you both have a preference on the type of architecture, an indoor/outdoor location, or any other specific aspects, that will be a perfect location to choose as well. It doesn’t always have to be a complicated choice – pick a place that you both love.

Timing is Everything

Consider the time and season for your session! Depending on your location, different times of the year can offer unique backgrounds and lighting. Talk to your photographer about the best time of day for your session, as they will have a good understanding of how the light falls in different locations. Tip: golden hour is always a great idea!

Thinking about what kind of vibe you want from your photos can definitely help you to narrow down the time of year or day that you want to take your photos. Golden hour, sunrise, a gloomy and moody day, or a bright day; the mood and the season is completely up to you. Your photographer will also be more than happy to offer some advice!

Coordinate Your Outfits

Coordinate your outfits, so they complement each other. Choose colors that work well together, avoiding clashing patterns or bold prints. Most times, neutrals are best because you don’t want the focus pulled away from you! Consider your location and the overall vibe you want to convey in your photos. Dress comfortably and make sure you feel confident in what you wear.

You two will look your best when you feel your best. So of course, make sure to think about your outfits, the vibe that you’re going for, and how you want to feel.

Bring Props and Personal Touches

Think about incorporating props or personal touches to make your engagement session unique. It could be a picnic setup, your furry friend, or even your favorite food! These props can add interest and tell a story about you as a couple. Think of it as a date – but your photographer just so happens to be there capturing your memories.

Multiple Outfit Changes

If you want to add variety to your session, plan for multiple outfit changes. This can give your photos a different look and feel, allowing you to have a diverse collection of images to choose from when it comes to announcements or your wedding website.

If you have multiple outfits in your engagement session, you can choose a formal outfit and a casual outfit as well! This way, you can have the best of both worlds if you’re having trouble deciding which vibe you want to go for.

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

One of the most important things to remember during your engagement session is to relax and have fun. Trust your photographer to capture beautiful moments and guide you through different poses. It’s okay to be nervous, but remember that these photos are a celebration of your love, so let your connection shine through! Be together, and embrace the moment.

Communicate with Your Photographer

Before your session, communicate your vision, preferences, and any specific ideas you may have with your photographer. This will ensure that everyone is on the same page and will help the photographer capture your unique love story. Remember, your engagement session is a time to celebrate your love and the exciting journey ahead. Hopefully, by following these tips for how to plan your engagement session you’ll be well-prepared for a session you’ll cherish forever. Happy planning!

Kind Words

“Noelle was AMAZING and exceeded any expectations I had for a photographer. Not only did her photos blow us away, but she went above and beyond helping us coordinate our wedding day schedule and itinerary (which was invaluable!). In addition to being easy to work with, she provided us with a sneak peak of our day in less than 24 hours! I could not recommend Noelle enough. You will not be disappointed if you book her for your special day.”
